Score Breakdown

Integrity

missing The verification report (2025) reports a reversal/negative balance of 5,360 CORCs after changes in production and monitoring, indicating non-trivial permanence/accounting risk.

inferred Additionality is described as an investment test, but confirmation by the VVB and baseline reassessment timing were not found in the extracted record.

Transparency

verified A recent verification report is available with a clearly stated monitoring period (2025-01-01 to 2025-09-30).

missing Verified vs claimed removals were not found in the extracted record, and several MRV elements (e.g., usage monitoring approach) are not stated.

Claim Safety

missing Reversal/negative balance and multiple corrective actions (LCA, boundary, emission factor, transport) increase over-crediting/claim risk for removals.

inferred CORSIA eligibility and CCP status were not found in the extracted record, limiting confidence for downstream claims.

Documentation

verified Documentation appears relatively complete in volume (11 documents used) and includes a recent verification report dated 2025-12-17.

missing Evidence document labeling is weak (evidence docs listed as "unknown") and extraction confidence is only medium.

Detailed Analysis

Integrity

The verification report (2025-12-17) reports a reversal event: changes in biochar production and monitoring methods resulted in a negative balance of 5,360 CORCs, which is a direct integrity concern for a removal credit. The baseline is described as project-specific and the additionality approach is an investment test, but confirmation of additionality by the VVB and any baseline reassessment timing were not found in the extracted record. No material findings were reported in the verification report, but the number and nature of corrective actions suggest underlying quantification/control weaknesses that can affect integrity.

Transparency

The verification report (2025-12-17) provides a defined monitoring period (2025-01-01 to 2025-09-30) and identifies the VVB as EnergyLink Services. However, the extracted record does not include total removals claimed or verified, making it hard to independently assess issuance accuracy. Several monitoring/quantification specifics (e.g., usage monitoring method, leakage treatment) were not found in the extracted record, reducing transparency.

Claim Safety

Claim safety is weakened by the reported negative balance of 5,360 CORCs in the verification report (2025), which signals that previously expected removals may not have been durable or correctly accounted for under updated methods. The verification report also lists multiple corrective actions (LCA boundary, moisture content, emission factor, and transport), which are common drivers of over-crediting risk in biochar LCAs. CORSIA eligibility and CCP status were not found in the extracted record, so the risk of inappropriate downstream claims cannot be ruled out.

Documentation

A recent verification report dated 2025-12-17 is present, and the extraction indicates 11 documents were used, which supports documentation completeness. Still, the evidence document list is not well specified (listed as "unknown"), and extraction confidence is only medium, implying some limitations in document readability/structure. The presence of multiple corrective actions in the verification report also suggests documentation and data systems required remediation during assurance.

Overall

Overall quality is constrained primarily by the reported reversal/negative balance (5,360 CORCs) and the concentration of corrective actions around LCA boundary and key parameters, which together elevate over-crediting and durability/accounting risk. Transparency and claim safety are further limited because key quantitative fields (claimed/verified removals, leakage deduction, buffer pool) and eligibility statuses (CORSIA/CCP) were not found in the extracted record. No contradictions were identified in the extracted record, so no cross-document discrepancies needed resolution.

Audit Analysis

This Puro biochar removal project shows material integrity concerns because a reversal/negative balance was reported (a negative balance of 5,360 CORCs) following changes in production and monitoring. While a recent verification report exists and no material findings were reported, multiple corrective actions indicate MRV and boundary/LCA weaknesses that increase over-crediting risk.

Project Description

Wakefield Biochar is a minority-owned company focused on making our planet healthier through their “Better Soil. Better World.” philosophy. The company is based in Valdosta, Georgia, a city that thrived from the forestry industry, specifically pine products, for over 100 years. Wakefield BioChar currently employs 23 individuals across its operations which focus on the management of pulp and paper mill waste. It is obvious to Wakefield that such wastes should be viewed as resources, a vision they have transformed into a sustainable business. Wakefield Biochar has created a series of branded biochar products and compost blends for retail Walmart, Lowes, Amazon, and Sam's Club. In addition, they supply local farmers with biochar, spreading it on pasturelands to improve grass yields, as well as using biochar blends for land remediation projects. The feedstock is pine bark from FSC-certified forests. Carbon credits are key to expanding Wakefield BioChar’s business and their ability to sequester carbon. Wakefield Biochar is currently undergoing a rigorous audit process and CORCs are expected to be issued during q3.

Red Flags

  • Reversal event reported: changes in production and monitoring led to a negative balance of 5,360 CORCs
  • Multiple corrective actions in the verification report (LCA boundary, moisture content, emission factor, transport) suggest MRV/LCA weaknesses
  • Key quantifications not found in the extracted record (verified removals, leakage deduction, buffer pool, CORSIA/CCP status)

Cosa migliorerebbe questo punteggio

  • Disclose and reconcile claimed vs verified removals for the monitoring period, including the calculation steps behind the negative balance and any adjustments to previously issued CORCs.
  • Publish clear leakage treatment, buffer/insurance approach (if any), and full LCA parameter documentation (moisture content, emission factors, transport distances, boundary) with evidence that corrective actions were closed.

Questi suggerimenti indicano quali prove pubbliche aggiuntive potrebbero migliorare il livello di confidenza di questa valutazione. Non garantiscono un punteggio futuro più alto.
